Where
History & The Town Today
Mindo's journey began with the indigenous Yumbo people, who used this valley as a strategic trade center or 'tambo' between the Andes and the coast. Formally founded in 1861, the town has transformed from a quiet farming community into a global leader in conservation. In 1997, it was declared the first Area of Importance for the Conservation of Birds in South America, and today it is part of the UNESCO Choco Andino Biosphere Reserve.
Today, Mindo is home to a friendly community of around 3,000 people. While it remains a peaceful sanctuary, it has become a vibrant ecotourism hub famous for its 450+ bird species, world-class chocolate, and thrilling adventure sports. Despite its growth, Mindo maintains its authentic charm, where the clouds meet the forest and life moves at the pace of nature.
